Strategic Supply Chain Management in Mining - an overview from an industry expert and award winner

In this recent audio interview, Mining IQ was delighted to have the opportunity to discuss this critical topic in detail with an industry expert, Jamie Bradford, Lead Logistics Manager for SKM.

As SKM’s Lead Logistics Manager, Jamie has observed bottlenecks in processes caused by the lack of coordination and collaboration between governmental agencies and industry service providers in relation to the logistics task, particularly with regard to mine expansions.

He identified the potential to improve strategic supply chain management through collaboration to the benefit of the wider industry. The initiative revolves around potential benefits from an integrated approach to supply chain management in collaboration with several key players in Western Australian logistics.

For this initiative, Jamie was awarded the Professional of the Year award at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILTA) Annual Transport and Logistics Industry Excellence Awards.

Questions discussed:

  • Could this approach could be replicated in other regions around the world where movement of materials to inland mine sites requires a more strategic approach to logistics?
  • The issue of strategic supply chain logistics has become particularly pertinent with the advent of modularisation – how have you dealt with this and what opportunities does modularisation present? As I understand it - Modularisation provides an off-site construction approach, reducing the amount of site labour required on-site during construction, improving quality and safety, fabrication and erection – can you comment on this statement?
  • As a follow on question - with increasing modularisation comes the need to deliver large modules to site, over long distances, often in remote locations, with poor infrastructure to support such movement of materials – what is your advice to others facing these same challenges?
  • A more innovative approach to logistics management is becoming more important in this environment. Can you share an example of innovation in logistics management that has benefited the industry or a specific case study project?
